For more than two decades we have been working so that young people find their voice
develop their skills and become active members of their community. Get to know
our path from the founding in 2001 to the present day.
Our mission is to develop young people and pass on practical skills and competences, preparing them for further study, the world of work and adult life.
The history of KÖZ-Pont Youth Association began in Debrecen in 2001, when a few enthusiastic young people joined forces as volunteers to support the work of the local student council. What was then a circle of friends and a few good ideas has grown into a nationally known and professionally recognised youth civil organisation.
Over the years we have continuously expanded our activities: we created youth offices and community spaces, helped student councils, organised volunteer programmes, trainings and community events, while giving more and more young people the opportunity to grow and take on community roles.
Today our work reaches far beyond the region: we work in national and international partnerships, provide the professional background for several county student councils, coordinate international volunteer programmes, and build cooperation with civil, corporate and institutional partners.
Although we have developed a lot over the past two-plus decades, our mission has remained unchanged: we believe that every young person has potential that a supportive community, authentic mentors and real experiences help unfold. This is the approach that has defined KÖZ-Pont's work from the start, and on which we build our future.
The story actually began in 1999, when the City Student Council was founded in Debrecen. It is closely connected to the founding of the Association, since in the first years our Association operated mainly to help and support this youth group.
• The first president of our association was Anikó Reindl, who herself had been part of the work of the VDÖK. • This year our most important programme was organising the City Student Days, which included a sports day, a culture day and a "student party". • The 2nd Vekeri Lake Camp also took place, where besides team building we had the chance to evaluate the year and plan the next period. Even then we paid great attention to such community and planning occasions.
This year the first Debrecen Student Spring (Diáktavasz) took place, a programme series made up of several large-scale events. It included, among others, the Main Square Student Festival, the Mad Graduation March (Bolondballagás), the Student Ball and Student Beauty Contest, and the City Sports Day.
• Every year the Student Spring had a co-organising school whose students could see the organisation up close. In this way school student councils could also grow in event organisation. • This was when we first opened up to the wider world: our first international experience was a conference in Vienna organised by EFYSO (European Federation of Youth Service Organisation).
We organised the 2nd Student Spring (Diáktavasz), which was extended with two special programmes. One was the "Africa Now" exhibition, complemented by an Africa evening attended by the then ambassador of the Republic of South Africa.
• Our other special event was called "Where We Are Heading – Europe", where quizzes, exhibitions and talks awaited participants. • This was the year we opened our doors to primary school students too. • We had the chance to attend the summer youth conference organised by EFYSO (European Federation of Youth Service Organisation) in Poland. • Perhaps the most important event of the year was that in Berettyóújfalu, during the Eötvös Days, HABIDISZ (the Association of Student Councils of Hajdú-Bihar County) was founded. • HABIDISZ was active already in its first year: we carried out the first Summer Youth Festival, NYIF for short, a programme series involving 6 settlements. During NYIF we generally organised events on several days of the last week of the school year in different settlements. At the venues the local school student councils came up with and carried out the programmes with the help of HABIDISZ and the Association, always based on local needs.
At the beginning of the year we met our still-active partner, the Democratic Youth Foundation (DIA), and took part in the first DIA days in Budapest.
• We concluded an agreement with the European Information Point, under which they gave us a place for meetings and we could use the local infrastructure. In return we helped them with volunteer work. This was the first time since we began operating that we had a place where we could "nestle in". • The 2nd Summer Youth Festival took place, now with 8 settlements participating, as well as the 3rd Student Spring. • We developed a significant cross-border, Transylvanian relationship with the MAKOSZ (Association of Hungarian Secondary School Students in Romania) team. Thanks to this, the members of our Association and the MAKOSZ team became closely connected for a long time. • Our biggest event was organising the 1st National Student Week, with which we created several traditions. One was that after the Debrecen event the Student Week became a recurring event for several years, always in a different city and with a different organising group. • The other tradition that emerged during the Student Week was the shared dance. This was the first time that the young people of the Association for the VDÖK performed a pre-learned choreography together. The dance was inspired by the film Grease, and we had the chance to perform it on the stage of the Csokonai Theatre. After this we created some association dance for several years. • This is also where one of our old catchphrases, our motto, was born: "We solve everything and always smile!"
We added a new programme called the Hajdú-Bihar-Bihor meeting. Its aim was to get to know our friends from Oradea and plan programmes together.
• We carried out our usual NYIF programme series together with the MAKOSZ team. • The 2nd DIA days also took place, again in Budapest, where we volunteered all day at a children's home. • Our organisation ran a one-week camp at the Zsuzsi train in Debrecen, during which we renovated the narrow-gauge railway and its surroundings. • Our first Charity Gala Evening took place, with the proceeds of which we supported the little residents of Reménysugár in Debrecen. Before the Gala we also visited them in person and spent a wonderful afternoon together with lots of games and laughter. • The team created a new dance, this time to the music of the film Dirty Dancing.
This year the DIA days took place again, but this time not in the capital but in Hajdúszoboszló, so we played a significant role in the organisation as well.
• Dance was not missing this year either: this time we created a joint choreography to the music of the Romeo and Juliet musical. • The VDÖK camp returned, which we ran in two turns because of the number of interested people. • The Debrecen event within NYIF, the Young People's Street (Fiatalok utcája), moved to the area around Békás Lake in Debrecen and was expanded with a Rock-tó festival part. • During the summer we returned to the Zsuzsi train and held an event called the National Student Academy. During the week participants could volunteer and attend several trainings. The programme was crowned by an outdoor training element, where participants stepped out of their comfort zone and completed various tasks in teams. • In the autumn our Association organised the opening event of the DÖOK (National Conference of Student Councils), which lasted three days and whose main element was building relationships between regions and organisations. • This year too we organised a Charity Gala Evening, this time for the Home of Young People with Disabilities, today called DMJV Institution for People with Disabilities. At the Gala the residents of the institution thanked us for our help with a wonderful and moving performance. • A significant change in the Association's life was the founding of DeCi, the Debrecen Civilians volunteer programme, through which we have ever since been able to lend a helping hand to several social institutions and organisations.
Our multi-session project "Let's play together so we can learn" started under the Debrecen Civilians volunteer programme, in which we got to know the students of the Primary School, Grammar School, Vocational Grammar School, Technical School and Dormitory for Children with Visual Impairments better through the arts, such as music, instruments and dance.
• We hosted several regional, area and county trainings, where young people could think and act together, and even volunteer at an animal shelter. • From this year our Association took on the mailing and poster-sending preparation of the KÖZÖD! programme, one of the biggest programmes of our partner DIA at the time. In this we prepared envelopes for posting for several hundred institutions across the country. • We organised one of our biggest children's programmes, Youth Day (Fiatalok Napja) in Debrecen, at the Kölcsey Centre. During the day not only crafts and performances took centre stage, but we also ran a Free Smile Campaign, since we believe in the power of a smile. On this occasion, with the participants, we also made a picture of a smile formed from people, which remains important to us to this day. • We launched an in-house training called "Then and Now", in which we trained our volunteers, each time on a different topic. • We also took a huge step forward internationally: we organised our own EFYSO (European Federation of Youth Service Organisation) summer conference. Lots of foreign young people, a huge buzz and a meeting of cultures characterised this programme. With the participants we visited Hortobágy, where they got to know archery and folk dance, and we also got to Eger. • This year the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Children's and Youth Council, SZSZBGYIÖK for short, was founded, with the aim that the young people of this county too could create wonders together.
The Association went through major changes in 2008. From autumn of that year the Association no longer provided the background for the City Student Council, as the informal organisation had been completely transformed.
• Our Association was again responsible for enveloping the KÖZÖD programme, involving more and more volunteers. • In Hajdúböszörmény we ran a youth club for a year in the Fürdőkert. • With our volunteers we took part in the Run in the Light Sports and Family Day in Budapest. The then SZSZBGYIÖK president liked the initiative very much, so we organised a similar event in Nyíregyháza. The point of the programme was for healthy young people and disadvantaged young people to spend a pleasant day together with sport, games, stage shows and lots of laughter. • The young people of Szabolcs were active not only in volunteering: in 2008 SZSZBGYIÖK and the Association hosted the National Student Week, to which we had been connected before. • This year also created the opportunity to open our first truly own youth office in Debrecen, in Tócóskert, under the name KÖZ-Pont Youth Office and Community Space. • Our office was not idle: after opening it carried out two events. One was the Housing Estate Festival, during which we organised a family day for the residents. The other was the SZEVASZ programme in the spirit of environmental awareness, in which teams competed through various creative tasks.
The year 2009 again brought significant changes to the Association's life. By then the organisation's scope of activity had changed and widened to such an extent that we considered it time to change the name.
• KÖZ-Pont Youth Association continued its persistent and value-creating work as a regional youth civil organisation, founded on many years of professional experience in youth work and events for young people. • The Debrecen Civilians volunteer programme kept expanding, to the point that up to 8–10 events took place in a month. • Our Association was again asked to prepare the envelopes of the KÖZÖD programme. • This year we carried out many youth and sports programmes. We also launched several events that became traditions for us over the years. These included the 3 Tusa Torna, where teams of three competed in three categories: running, cycling and a quiz competition. • Among our key programmes was organising the County Sports Days in both Nyíregyháza and Debrecen. Primary and secondary school teams could measure their skills in football, volleyball and basketball. • The Run in the Light! Sports and Family Day and the Charity Gala Evening took place again, and after a longer break the Summer Youth Festival was revived too.
This year too we organised a great many events, now reaching young people in two counties. We continued our "I'm a student council member and I commit!" training series, which developed our volunteers through courses and trainings.
• Our Charity Gala Evening took place again, combined with the awards ceremony launched the previous year. So our Snail Awards were presented, now in actual snail form. The aim of the Snail Award is simply recognition, praise and thanks to whoever receives it – be it an individual, municipality, institution, civil organisation, business or anyone the awarders consider worthy. • The summer was all about festivals. We organised our by now traditional Summer Youth Festival, to which 8 settlements connected this year. We took part as an outside exhibitor at EFOTT and Campus, and we of course also helped at the World Music Festival in Panyola. • This year too our office's events took place, including the Housing Estate Festival and our programme called SZEVASZ. • The Run in the Light! Sports and Family Day was held again, and was also part of a three-day programme series made up of three trainings. Countless smiles and countless young people eager to act joined these occasions. • It was a very successful year for our Debrecen Civilians Volunteer Programme too: not only did we organise countless volunteer activities, but the programme won the Volunteer Programme of the Year award at county level. • Our youth media programme called "Make Your Voice Heard" (Hallasd a hangod) was launched. • A new organisation began to spread its wings under the Association's aegis: the Berettyóújfalu Children's and Youth Council.
This year was no different from the others, full of innovations and big events, as we have come to expect.
• Our young people took part in several youth exchanges internationally, and our first EVS (European Volunteer Service) volunteer hosting also took place. The point of the programme was that we could host young people aged 18–30 at our Association, who helped our day-to-day work as volunteers. Our first volunteer helped with advertising the programme and organising our programmes. The programme provided, among other things, housing, board and travel for them. • We organised the TÓFESZT Volunteer Festival for the first time, a five-day programme. Each day was split into three parts: in the mornings participants joined various volunteer activities, for example at an animal shelter, a children's playhouse for small children from a children's home, the Free Smile Campaign or fence painting. The afternoons were about film clubs, talks and interesting conversations, while evenings were for entertainment and getting to know each other: with a folk dance house, a campfire and swimming. • One of the great moments of the year was opening our first community space in Nyíregyháza, on the first floor of Nyír Plaza. The space was named Community FACEs Youth Office and Community Space. Our team carried out almost all the renovation work: together we beautified, shaped and formed it to our own taste. From then on the SZSZBGYIÖK team also had a place to nestle in. • We made a giant board game that guided those interested into the topic of volunteering. The game worked on the basis of a well-known board game, and one of its main components was communication. • Our Debrecen Civilians Volunteer Programme kept going too: countless activities and a great many volunteers helped our work and that of our partner organisations. This year we received another important confirmation and recognition: after the previous year's county award we also won the Volunteer Programme of the Year award at national level. • We again organised the Run in the Light! Sports and Family Day, which this year too attracted a great many young people and interested visitors to downtown Nyíregyháza. • Our Charity Gala Evening took place again, which was also the first event of the Association's 10th-birthday event series. This year too we presented our Snail Award at this event. • Yes, this year our Association also celebrated its 10th birthday. This gave us a chance to pause, look back on our past and reminisce. We organised several events on this occasion, but the birthday celebration itself stood out among them all.
Our Nyíregyháza office began actual operation this year. We organised exhibitions on several occasions, and four times a Talent Carnival (Tehetség Kavalkád) for talented young people, where they could show their skills.
• Under the EVS programme we again hosted three new volunteers, and we also started our EVS sending programme. • Our traditional Gala Evening, at which we presented our Snail Awards, could not be missed this year either. • The Debrecen Civilians programme expanded further. From this year we worked not only with volunteers but also with young people who needed the 50 hours of school community service required for the school-leaving exam. • Our Debrecen office closed its doors in Tócóskert at the end of the year, but reopened in the Debrecen Plaza shopping centre. • This year we relaunched our "I'm a student council member and I commit!" training series in both counties. • From this year our Outdoor training, organised for the youth leaders of our two student councils, HABIDISZ and SZSZBGYIÖK, took off. The aim of the Outdoor is for student council leaders to solve various tasks together, to develop their problem-solving skills, and for board members to step out of their comfort zone. This helps them be present and work more effectively in the life of their own student councils. Each Outdoor training had its own theme; this year we built the whole thing around the world of film.
